At just 21-years-old, Steve “Pre” Prefontaine took the lead with four laps to go at the 1972 Olympic 5,000M final, but lost the medal in the last steps of the race. He was the reason Oregon became known as the Running Capital. His coach, Bill Bowerman, made the first ever Nike shoes, and he made them for Steve Prefontaine.
