Spectators’ Weekend in Salida (by Erika)

3 Aug

As you know, Christa raced in Salida this past weekend, and had an awesome result in the criterium, where she took 2nd!

Luckily for me, my parents decided, very spontaneously, to head that direction to camp on Saturday night and cheer for my sister on Sunday.  Sadly, we didn’t make it in time to watch Christa clinch silver in the criterium.  We were able, though, to help the team on Sunday by stationing in the feed zone to give them water and encouragement, and we ended up have a fun weekend in Salida!

As you may know, Salida is a biking mecca, and the town seems to have a bike shop on every corner, along with several cozy coffee shops and fun boutiques. We got a great campsite for our pop up camper (here), next to the Arkansas river, where we enjoyed a rain-less afternoon and evening, and beautiful next morning.

After we left our campsite on Sunday morning, we had time to kill before Christa’s race, so we headed to Cafe Dawn, a cute corner coffee shop in downtown Salida.

The owners restored a garage and transformed it into a warm, relaxed café, with a great patio.

The Sweet Spot

The Sweet Spot is the ice cream shop neighboring Cafe Dawn.  It wasn’t open yet, so we didn’t enjoy any ice cream, but I thought it was cute enough to share. 🙂

In the heat, we enjoyed iced drinks.  As my sisters know, one of my favorite things is to read a good book in a cute coffee shop.  I was anticipating doing this, when we got a call from Christa asking if we could feed the team at the feed zone.  This is a very serious job, and we left immediately to prepare for our task (so I didn’t get to enjoy my book, but I did get to help the Natural Grocers team, which was WAY more fun).

It was a great weekend of racing, cheering, and camping in beautiful Salida, Colorado.

Until next time, Erika
